What is a lab created diamond?
Lab grown diamonds, also called lab created diamonds, are developed in a controlled laboratory environment. They are formed through advanced processes that duplicate the natural, geological conditions that result in earth-mined, diamonds. Lab grown and earth-mined diamonds share the same chemical, physical, and optical characteristics and are evaluated by the same 4 Cs of diamond quality representing beauty and structure: color, clarity, cut and carat weight. The only difference is the point of origin and the length of time the diamond takes to form.

Lab Created Diamonds vs. Mined Diamonds
While the process and the time to create a lab grown diamond is different from a mined diamond, the end composition is the same. Both have the same physical, chemical, and optical properties, and both share the same intoxicating brilliance and dazzling shine. Lab created diamonds are impossible to identify by the human eye. They can only be identified by a jeweler with special trade tools and equipment which makes them a popular choice for engagement rings. Our conflict-free lab grown diamonds are independently certified and come with an appraisal, just as we provide with our earth-mined diamonds.

Are lab grown diamonds real diamonds?
Yes. A real diamond is determined by its composition. Both lab grown and earth-mined diamonds share the same optical, chemical, gemological and physical properties.
Are lab grown diamonds less expensive?
When comparing diamonds of similar size and quality, yes, lab created diamonds are more affordable than mined diamonds. Lab grown diamonds are an excellent value for an engagement ring, for a heartfelt gift or future family heirloom.
Are earth-mined diamonds higher quality?
Mined diamonds are not inherently of higher quality than lab grown diamonds. All diamonds, whether lab created or mined diamonds, are evaluated on the 4Cs: color, clarity, cut and carat weight. All diamonds can have varying quality dependent upon those components and evaluations.
What is the resale value of lab created diamonds?
We do not consider either lab grown or earth-mined diamonds to be an investment. The pricing of all diamonds is out of our control as the value of a diamond, as with any item you purchase, is dependent upon multiple factors. How can you tell the difference?
When compared, it is impossible to discern whether a diamond is lab grown or earth-mined. Using special tools and equipment, jewelers can detect trace elements that distinguish the two types of diamonds but do not alter a diamond’s brilliant appearance.

Yes, all of the lab created diamonds we sell include an independent certificate of quality from a national certification lab, such as IGI Reports or Gem Certification & Assurance Lab (GCAL). These reputable grading laboratories are independent of our business and provide our customers with a quality assurance for diamonds. In addition, DeSumma & Wexler Fine Jewelry will provide an appraisal for insurance coverage with every purchase of a lab grown diamond.
